On 28 May 1871, 147 men and women were lined up against this wall and shot. The Paris Commune — 72 days — was over.
Every year on the last Sunday of May, thousands make a pilgrimage here. They leave red carnations at the base of the stones.
The rest of the year it stands quietly at the eastern edge of the cemetery, easy to miss, marked only by a small plaque.

Napoleon commissioned this fountain in 1808 to celebrate his victories. The gilded figure at the top originally held a list of his campaigns in her raised hand.
After Waterloo, the list became awkward. It was quietly removed.
An empty gesture. A monument to victories that eventually ran out.
